fabulous skirt made from a vintage kimono.

I made this as part of a sustainable fashion project that I have named 'Waist knot ' which is a play on the saying ' waste not want not ' . All of the items in the collection have been recycled from vintage kimonos which for one reason or another had come to the end of their usefulness in that form.

I collected , unpicked and washed the kimonos myself and can guarantee its authenticity. The term ' Waist knot ' also refers to  the wrap belts that feature in the collection as one of  series of unique multi sizing techniques i have used to further increase the sustainability of the garments.

This skirt can easily change within a size variation between a uk size 14 , up to around a size 20 on account of the fact that it has an elasticated waist , which is then supported by a tied belt , or waist knot. I can tighten the elastic easily for you if you are smaller than that. The model is a size uk 14 and it was pretty generous on her. The belt is long enough to tie around the waist and fall into a lovely bow.

 approx. measurements

waist , variable between 32 inches and 44 inches ( 81cm -112cm ) can be altered to smaller on request

hips , up to 57 inches (145cm)

length at centre front and back from lower edge of waist band to hem 25 inches (64 cm )

length at sides from lower edge of waistband to points  38 inches ( 97cm)

The skirt is a unique design of my own , which features big pockets in the folds , which have been lined with gorgeous plain pink silk , to match the lining of the waist band and belt, and co ordinate beautifully with the kimono silk.

there are also 2 pleats at the waist , both front and back to add to the fullness ,  It si a very fluid and stunning garment.  The silk , although very old is in very good  condition , has a beautiful weight and drape. It has been hand printed with darker pink flowers over the top of the multi shaded pink background.
